As the Civil War erupted in the United States, a young Jew by the name of Jacob Elsas was conscripted into the Union Army. The irony is that Elsas had immigrated to America from Germany when he turned 18, in order to avoid being conscripted into the army there.

When he arrived in America young Elsas begged and borrowed until he had enough money for train fare to Ohio. He planned on living with relatives who had already settled in the Cincinnati area. Shortly after arriving in Cincinnati Elsas took advantage of his uncle’s business contacts and was soon able to find employment as a packer. Not satisfied with that job, however, he soon entered the junk trade and began traveling and selling in Kentucky and neighboring states.

By 1864 Elsas had traveled to the growing commercial center of Nashville, which at the time was under federal military occupation. The L&N Railroad had been completed in 1859, virtually securing Nashville’s designation as a regional hub. It only followed to reason that the Union Army would make the city its primary western headquarters for food, supplies, and ordnance. The Census Bureau’s Population Projection Branch calculates that by as early as 2042 whites will become a minority in the United States. White children will become a minority even sooner. By as early as 2023 more than half of all children in the United States will be non-white.

Census Bureau figures indicate that in the coming years all non-white racial groups will be posting dramatic gains. The number of Mestizos will nearly triple in the United States, increasing from their current population of 46.7 million to 132.8 million by 2050. Blacks are projected to increase from their current population of 41.1 million to 65.7 million by 2050. The Asian American population will increase from their current figure of 15.5 million to 40.6 million. American Indians and Alaska natives are projected to increase from 3.9 million to 8.6 million. In 2023, and folks, that’s only 15 years from now, more than half of all children in the United States will be non-white. Dave Waddington, chief of the Census Bureau’s population projection branch stated, and I quote: “Part of it is a higher fertility rate for some of the minority groups, Hispanics in particular.” End Quote.
